This past week as we celebrated Father’s Day I took some time to reflect on all the things that I have learned from my dad over the years. The list is impossibly long but includes everything from landscaping to leading a family, from wise stewardship to outrageous generosity.
I know many of you share similar experiences and have learned similar lessons from your dad over the years. Unfortunately, I also understand that there are some whose experience with their father has been less enjoyable.
Regardless of your experience with your earthly father we all share a heavenly Father who is outrageously generous to His children. Jesus said “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:11 ESV)
Take a few moments to think about all the ways God has been generous in your life. Reflect on verses like Psalm 65:9-11 that describe God’s generosity as abundant, overflowing and greatly enriching. Let us never take for granted that in the greatest demonstration of His love God generously gave His only Son so that we could have life through Him.
As we reflect on all the ways that God has been generous and blessed our lives we cannot help but learn to be generous as His children. As we pattern our lives and our generosity after our heavenly Father we make it possible for the church to share the message of His generous love with our community!
